I Was browsing the interent today, and I was actually looking for fathers day poems to put in my family website, and I came across this , which reminded me about our discussion on Forgiveness at bible study the other day.
Forgiveness ... A Very Good Understanding of Forgiveness
One of my teachers had each of
us bring a clear plastic bag and a sack of potatoes.
For every person we'd refuse to forgive in our life, we were told to
choose a potato,
write on it the name and date, and put it in the plastic bag.
Some of our bags, as you can imagine, were quite heavy.
We were then told to carry this
bag with us everywhere for one week,
putting it beside our bed at night, on the car seat when driving,
next to our desk at work.
The hassle of lugging this
around with us
made it clear what a weight we were carrying spiritually,
and how we had to pay attention to it all the time to not forget,
and keep leaving it in embarrassing places.
Naturally, the condition of the
potatoes deteriorated to a nasty slime.
This was a great metaphor for the price we pay
for keeping our pain and heavy negativity!
Too often we think of
forgiveness as a gift to the other person,
and while that's true ...
it clearly is also a gift for ourselves!
So the next time you decide you
can't forgive someone, ask yourself ...
Isn't MY bag heavy enough?

you may be able to bear it." 1 Corinthians 10:12

Luke chapter 7
Jesus Heals a Centurions servent
-Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum
-a certain centurions servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die
centurion- A Roman Officer
-And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.
-Jesus was prepared to go with him to heal the servant when the Centurion told him that he need not come in person. "I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one to 'Go' and he goes, and to that one, 'come' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this," and he does it."
-This man knew that Jesus' presence was not required in order for his authority to be exercised. He understood that Jesus could heal his servant from right where he stood. And in fact he did so. The Centurion said to him, "I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and my servant will be healed." -- This faith was commended by Jesus. "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.
(meaning) the centurion's example of faith came from outside of the nation of Israel.
Jesus Raises the son of the Widow of Nain
-In the town called Nain, Jesus and those traveling with him arrived at the gate about the time a dead person was being carried out. The deceased was the only son of a widow, and Jesus looked mercifully upon her.
-When Jesus touched the coffin and spoke to the dead man, he was raised and he presented him to his mother
John The Baptist
-John the Baptist heard about the miracles which Jesus performed. he asked his friends to go and find out if this was the one for whom they had waited. "Are you, the one who was to come, or shall we expect someone else?"
-Though Jesus commended the greatness of John to the crowd, he also confronted John about his doubt.
-Jesus tells Johns disciples, to go and tell John of all things they have seen and heard.
-Jesus' popular appeal was widespread, but that the Pharisees rejected his teachings "because they had not been baptized by John."
The baptism by John prepared and enabled people to receive Jesus when he appeared
The Sinful Woman
The woman mentioned here was a notorious "sinner" in her home town. She came to Jesus bringing a somewhat erotic gift of perfumed oil with which she anointed his feet after having cleaned them with her tears and wiped them with her hair.
-He used a story to teach them
"Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?"
-it is the one who had owed more. And so it is with the one who is forgiven more. The woman's expression was one of deep love, because she had been forgiven much. Jesus confirmed that the love of the woman which was visible with her actions toward Jesus, had come from being forgiven.
*next week we will read Luke chapter 8*
